I wasn’t going to be denied the pleasure of climbing higher, and the next day I found the nerve to climb that tree again. This time I held on tight. Hard to imagine how much I would have missed if I had never tried climbing a tree again. As an adult, I have climbed up to the towers and domes of monuments and cathedrals. How could I? Every time I tried it on, I winced. The color screamed at me; it mocked me. There was no way I could wear that color out in public. Someone else could, but not me. I ignored its presence in my closet for a decade until the truth spread over me like a big fat grin. This was a resounding lesson in being clear about what made me happy, what gave me a feeling of confidence; in knowing what was right for me—what fit. The magenta linen jacket joined the royal blue sweatshirt decorated with gold embossed reindeer I’d been given at a gift exchange party, and the faded maroon cutoffs that almost fit, but not quite.
