To enable the new institutions to award degrees, a new body was set up, the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA). This organisation was to set the standards for the new polytechnic degrees, validate teaching programmes and bestow degrees upon successful candidates. Other bodies validated their courses below degree level and made awards on their behalf, notably the Business and Technician Education Council (BTEC), which governed the Higher National Certificate and Diploma qualifications. The era of the polytechnic ended in 1992 when their status was changed to that of universities in their own right and the then redundant CNAA closed its doors.
